There's a storm a brewin! Right here in River City! Actually it's a State wide thunder bumper, and it's gonna wipe us out kids. At least that's what I'm hearing. More doom and gloom from all sides. The DHHS mess is setting up for another push thru Bangor, leaving us property tax payers on the hook. I had a chance to watch the recent City meetings with our local Legislators, the City Council, and staff. I thought this baby was going to come down to fisticuffs at one point, but Joe Baldacci got it under control. There clearly is a little poison between these 2 groups. The Councilors want answers. Nikki just smiles and nods, Doug Damon is just a tad to defensive, Adam Goode makes no sense, and I don't even know who the other guy was. I didn't see a lot of leadership on either side of that table. Some very good points were made by all, but in the end, whats being done? Mr. Damon went as far as asking the Council "what have YOU done to revise the welfare system?" Well Doug, they've read the legislation, something you obviously haven't done. The City is handcuffed by the State on this one. Pay attention please. You also tagged the citizenens of Maine as whiners by saying things like "You ask the Govenor to make welfare reforms, and then complain when he does" WTF?? Pull you head out Doug. Gov LePage is balancing the State's budget by shifting this burden onto the "Service Center" cities. That's Bangor numbnuts, you remember us don't you? So let me get this straight, my State taxes go down 1%, but my City taxes go up 3%. I'm not sure where you went to school, but that doesn't really work for me. You'd better pass me your rose colored glasses and give me a little of that kool-aide, cause I'm not feeling it.
The big dust up over the Library and the Occupy protesters took another odd turn last week. I for one, applaud Chair Weston for reminding the Library folks that their budget is heavy with City tax dollars. The Occupy folks have been clamoring to be heard on this, but in the end, its a money issue, not free speech, that's got the Chair wound up. The Library budget is a monster and must have some room for cuts, while the City is looking to keep the tax rate flat. Looks like this Council is serious about not raising taxes. Thank You!
Speaking of free speech, the Motor City Madman is coming to town, and some folks are not happy about it. This is a joke right? To think that anyone really gives a rats ass about what aging rocker Ted Nugent has to say is ridiculous. I'd be more concerned about the F bombs being tossed about by some of the heavy metal "bands" slated to play the Waterfront. Ted's just trying to remain relevant, 30 years to late. It's no difference than Rush saying he wants to see that young lady's sex tapes. Ratings people. If we lived in Russia, you could silence Mr. Nugent. But not here my friends. He's got the same rights as the Occupy protester's when it comes down to free speech. Hell, folks are even paying to see Ted. Just keep him out of the park next to the Library after 10pm. and we wont have any trouble.
Till next time, keep on keeping on.......
